Have a color-block dress in your closet and don’t know how to wear it? Think of paring it with neutrals to let that color really stand out. Gray is best worn with shades of brown and gold against a beige background richly completes the look. Bold colors are not meant to be ignored so it’s discouraging to find the right colors to pair the rest of the ensemble. Not for Spanish student, Haley Carloni. Her gray heals match well with her trench coat and the laces dress down the look making it class appropriate. As seen on Christian Dior‘s spring runway, a thin belt makes for a classy accessory and a statement when worn with a weather-permitting scarf. Haley’s lime green pop of color stands out from her black tights and peaks through her soft colored trench coat reminding us all that the warm days of spring are just around the corner. Signed, Shendi Spain Style Correspondent

Korean-based artist Seungchun Lim chisels both in clay and dread, with his sculptures of malformed children spinning realism and abstraction into masterful creations that instill empathy in the viewer. The artist’s intentions are questionable, as he lacks a formal website and has not granted diffusive English interviews, consequently affording an admirer what all art should, but seldom offers: the ability to interpret a piece without the creators guidance. I am an admirer, and in these gray scale carvings I find a quiet helplessness and a Francis Bacon-esque allusion (google his self-portraits), but more than that I gather Lim’s aim to is to share the story of a boy and the life he lives, but where he’s going and when and why are unknown. Chilled expressions and crippled body language sway the thought that this kid who has been excluded from a world he longs to inhabit, yet is terrified to revisit. A few art enthusiasts and blogs have highlighted Lim, citing his pieces with simplicity, and then some with political majesty, the former bidding insufficiencies and the latter unnecessary (and obnoxious) convolutions. One point that can be made and shared by all who view the works of this artist and his sculptures is that Lim is highly skilled and a bit perturbed, which delights me. The artist, who received his BFA in 2001 from Su-Won University, currently has collections in The Andrew Bae Gallery in Chicago, and in very galleries around Korea.” Source for photos: http://www.akive.org/eng/artist/artworks/A0000284/Seungchun%20Lim

Everyone does it right? Move across the country to live out a dream with no real plan besides everything working according to the great ideas you set in your head. Yeah, it’s harder than anticipated. Especially when you add a couple thousand more peeps that have the same ambitions as you, and had the privilege of being bred in the place that breeds the elite in your desired field. I assume at this point that it is no secret that I want to work in fashion. Well there must be some kind of line that says, “All fashion hopefuls get in line here,” and unfortunately, I am in the back. No, I didn’t think it would be a walk in the park. Nothing ever worth having is, but I guess I didn’t realize how bad other people wanted too. Let me backup a little. On Tuesday, during NYFW (New York Fashion Week), I volunteered to help out a show. I was told to get there at 10:30am, without knowing that the show didn’t start until 6pm. Now in most cases I would be irritated, but I had a chance to work in fashion all day so I didn’t complain much. But after a while and several talks with FIT students about how you have to “pay your dues” in this industry, and a freelance stylist acting like she was the Creative Director for Marc Jacobs, I had enough. All I really want is to do is create something beautiful, whether it’s a fashion show or a digital marketing campaign. I’m not trying to get into fashion to stroke my ego, or to “make a name for myself.” I come to fashion open-hearted. I’m an artist like everyone else, I just use my mind to create ideas that are or will be the legs for a successful marketing campaign to run and soar. That’s what I have to remember. The movement was never about anything besides living the type of life I always wanted. New York is my pot of gold, I just have to figure out how to cease it. (No different from anyone else in life.) I’m into fashion, and art for the love. The love of how a dress sways or how the cut and a tailor of pants make my heart flatter. That’s what it’s about (or should be about.) I’m reminded of all of this the very next day when I go to launch party sponsored by Nylon Magazine (Solange DJ’ed) for doo.Ri x Macy’s. In my opinion, the collaboration between the retailer and fashion brand is genius. It’s well made and of good taste. Also, the most expensive piece I saw only retailed for $75, and most of the pieces come easily become staples in anyone’s closet. The moral of my confession is too not get caught in the hype of life. Always, (and I mean ALWAYS) follow your heart. Find a career that makes you heart rage, and feels less like work, and more like...

These days, .gifs are the new .jpegs. And artist Ignacios Torres finds a unique vision of beauty, using these janky little animations. It works with our ever-shrinking attention spans to see something that has a 3D effect–no dorky glasses needed. Torres’ new series, Stellar, emerged from his interest in the theory humans are creations of cosmic matter made from the death of a star. Using dust and reflective confetti, Torres recreated these moments of “birth” with expressionless models falling against sunset backdrops in desert fields. The pictures are full of movement in their content alone, and the animation packs in even more action. Film has lost to digital and books are up against the wall thanks to Kindles. Could our jpeg-filled tumblrs start waning to the shaky, jittering world of .gifs? Words Via Hearty Magazine by Kate

M.I.A. – Bad Girls Directed by: Romain-Gavras M.I.A. takes “The Fast and the Furious” to Ouarzazate, Morocco in her new video for “Bad Girls,” which features Arabic street racers, ghost riders and women in patterned, blinged-out burkas touting semi-automatics. It’s an interesting take on culture, blending lyrics about having sex in cars with Americanized imagery of Moroccan culture, but it’s definitely not for the easily offended. “Live fast, die young, bad girls do it well,” M.I.A. sings on the hypnotic hook, which is unfurled over a midtempo thump provided by producer Danja. “Bad Girls” wasn’t M.I.A.’s only debut today — the Sri Lankan singer can also be seen on Madonna’s “Give Me All Your Luvin’,” which made its debut this morning on “On Air With Ryan Seacrest.” The video features M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj as cheerleaders. M.I.A.’s fourth album is expected to be released this summer, but before that, pop fans will see her alongside Madonna and Minaj at the Super Bowl halftime show in Indianapolis on Sunday Source: Billboard

While you’re working on you, and hopefully finding a way to pay your taxes, I’d like to thank you for your current shoot with Mr. Richardson. You’re still beautiful and should just focus on modeling and leave movies alone.
Between the drums on the sound track and the Forbidden City doors that opened the runway, there was no denying Jason Wu’s fall theme– Asia. “An Asian person doing an Asian collection. It’s a revolution,” Wu jokes at a preview the day before his show, noting that he did not decide to go there thematically because — news flash — China is booming. “It’s been booming for a long time,” said the designer, who lived in Taiwan until age nine and went back a year ago for the first time since starting his business. To tackle Asia, Wu broke his heritage into three parts — Mao military, Qing dynasty and the Forties Hollywood glamour of “Shanghai Express” When asked if this was his most elaborate collection to date, Wu replied, “It’s my most luxurious.” Working on his Target collection, in stores now, gave him a new respect for what he considers true luxury. So he pushed himself with the fit, the tailoring and the little things. Details, like the sheared mink worked into embroideries, the technical, thermal lining in the jackets and the brocade detail under the toe of a peep-toe pump, were impossible to appreciate as models flew by.

I have a serious fatal attraction to Prabal Gurung. Following his stellar spring 2012 collection, Gurung kept up the momentum for fall. A harness showed up here and there, there were swirly digital prints a plenty, ruffle flare skirts, and jelly fish like organza floated around dresses. But this being a fall/winter collection, the looks were darker and moodier. The first looks out were all black, with Gurung’s signature seam trousers done in neoprene with a flare leg. Models wore military inspired visors and their hair was stick straight and parted in the middle. Thx to: fashionista.com and truefashionistanow.com

Today, we lost one of the greatest voices in music history. Im really sad. I typically don’t get emotional with celebrity deaths, but Whitney was one of the voices that I grew up with and have continued to love throughout the years. She could open her mouth and music would come out, no need for a band, backup singers, nothing. She was such a talent and inspiration to millions. Be at peace now, love. You will surely be missed. Whitney Houston, who reigned as pop music’s queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, has died. She was 48. The entertainer was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. (6:55 p.m. ET) at the Beverly Hilton Hotel despite resuscitation efforts, a police spokesman said. Publicist Kristen Foster said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unclear. Discovered by famed music producer Clive Davis over 20 years ago, Houston had reportedly sold more than 170 million albums, singles and videos over her career. Her success carried her beyond music to movies, where she starred in hits like The Bodyguard and Waiting to Exhale. Her body of work includes seven straight Billboard No. 1 hits in the 1980s, including “Saving All My Love for You,” “Greatest Love of All” and “Where Do Broken Hearts Go.” Billboard puts her soundtrack to the movie “The Bodyguard” as one of the top 10 biggest-selling albums of all time. She also starred in the film. She influenced a generation of younger singers, from Christina Aguilera to Mariah Carey, who when she first came out sounded so much like Houston that many thought it was Houston. Houston was set to appear in this year’s “Sparkle,” a remake of the 1976 hit, which was loosely based on the story of The Supremes. It was her first movie role since 1996′s “The Preacher’s Wife.” But by the end of her career, Houston became a stunning cautionary tale of the toll of drug use. Her album sales plummeted and the hits stopped coming; her once serene image was shattered by a wild demeanor and bizarre public appearances. She confessed to abusing cocaine, marijuana and pills, and her once pristine voice became raspy and hoarse, unable to hit the high notes as she had during her prime.. Source: AP

The poster girl of this trend? Patra. The self-titled “Queen of the Pack” and dancehall star was born in Jamaica. She really found her style in Brooklyn in the 1990s, when she became famous for her signature goddess hair braids and body-con outfits. Patra’s style influences have recently been spotted on Beyoncé’s sister, singer Solange Knowles who opted for goddess braids at the end of last year as well as New York artist Maluca, who draws on her Dominican electro-merengue roots and favours figure-hugging crop tops, cage tops and bondage strap detailing. A resurgence of interest in dancehall commercially is also highlighted in Beyoncé’s smash hit Run the World, which samples the dancehall and funk carioca track Pon De Floor by Major Lazer featuring VYBZ Kartel. A clubland meets streetwear trend which references 1990s dancehall divas from the roots of Kingston, Jamaica, traveling to New York Take inspiration from the self-proclaimed “Queen of the Pack” Patra – see the singer’s style influence on Barbadian superstar Rihanna Energetic and independent, the looks is all about fierce femininity Key items include patterned catsuits, cutout dresses, cutaway shoulders, scuba zips, caged detailing and form-fitting Lycra crop tops Hair puffs and goddess hair braids are also back, as worn by Maluca and singer Solange Knowles Scuba zips feature on form-fitting tops and dresses Neon brights with black colour-blocked detail Shapes include body-con dresses, crop tops, bandeaux and bra tops Also of note is H&M Divided, which is reviving its 1990s name and logo: Impuls includes a pop-up collection of 13 fitted and draped pieces in black, grey and metallic. Bustier tops with corset detailing and racer backs create a 90s club feel, along with clinging dresses with cutouts on the shoulder.
On a journey in one of my favorite neighborhoods in the world, Soho, I came across local talent. I love the idea of taking different images and combining them. This particular piece entitled Cocaine could be perceived many different ways, especially if you didn’t know the title. Destroy/Rebuilt is a perfect collection of art inspired by New York City and urban influences. You can check out their website or luck up and find them in Soho like I did.
