“I’m going to be the Best Dressed Rapper”
Do you remember the late 90s/early 2000s when baggy was in? Maybe you remember Aaliyah in the baggy Tommy Hilfiger? What about when brands such like Karl Kani, Sean John, Rocawear, Phat Farm, and Pelle Pelle were at the height of their popularity?
There is no doubt that hip hop influences the culture around us. Dem Franchise Boys rapped about XXL white tees and they flew off the shelves. Nelly rapped about Air Force Ones and fights were started if anyone stepped on your pair. Most of us aspire to look like our favorite celebrities and will follow the trends according to them (Think Diddy and Ciroc). But I can’t help but to think back to the horrible way rappers used to dress.
Some of your favorite rappers are to blame.
Luckily, they got their act together.
Clearly, there was a chance. Something went off in rapper’s head that this street, around the way look wasn’t necessary to prove street cred. I think to myself, when did the shift happen. Surely there were those like Pharrell and Andre 3000 that were always ahead of the curve, but they were also slated as being different.
Then the answer became apparent. There was this rapper from the Southside of Chicago. He appeared on Def Poetry Jam and said, “Ralph Lauren was boring before I wore him.” His name is Kanye West, and undoubtedly he is the best dressed rapper. Along with his hot beats and consciously aware lyrics, he brought FASHION! He did away with the ill-fitting, overly huge and baggy clothing favored by those on the East Coast and Down South.
Thanks must be given to trendsetters such as Kanye. Now instead of boyfriends requesting the latest Pelle Pelle bomber jacket, he would much rather have a Ralph Lauren shirt, or a Moncler jacket. He may also be more willing to wear loafers over Air Forces Ones, (though I think Jordans will never go out of style, and that’s okay).
The dapper rapper is in and in full force! Please, fitted jeans over baggy ones, and cardigans and blazers over XXL white tees. Men, please take heed of the new trends in fashion set by your favorite rappers. Now, more than ever, is the time to actually look to rappers for fashion advice.
