Phone Book Portrait Sculptures by Alex Queral
Only heaven knows why phone companies continue to send out these monstrous phone books. We rarely see working phone booths anymore, plus Vonage & mobile phone numbers aren’t listed. At the end, they just become a way to balance the dining room table or become makeshift notepads. Save a tree dude!
Painter come sculpturist, Alex Queral seems to have felt the same way and now uses phonebooks as a new sculptural medium. Queral started as a painter who found himself spending a fortune on the paint used to create his 3D like paintings, so he moved over to Styrofoam which he didn’t like. After noticing some phonebooks left out for recycling, he realized they could be used the same way and that’s how the artist became a sculpturist.
Queral’s latest projects focus on making relief sculptures of familiar famous faces simply by carving the phone books and applying black paint for shading. Take a look at the gallery below and see how many faces you recognize. Also learn more about the interesting Alex Queral – HERE.
