Chanel – F/W 2011
A major departure for Lagerfeld and Chanel, the collection F/W 2011 captured the season’s 90s vibe and incorporated it into the the world of Chanel.
Set design always plays an important role in a Chanel show (see F/W 10’s giant iceberg), and this season’s scorched earth and ominous fog signaled a dark mood.
Many of the clothes embodied the ruggedness of the scene; jeans were rumpled and distressed, tweed jackets looked chopped off and layered on top of utility jackets. These were not the prim and fancy clothes one expects from Chanel. Though Lagerfeld made sure not to neglect his loyal clients with tailored pants and kicky skirt suits, the new grunge-y feel was still evident with looser fits and layering. Pant legs were decidedly wider and sweaters were oversized and slouchy. Evening looks took a more gothic turn, with layered sheers and lace, mostly in black. Embellished lace jumpsuits were a dressed up take on the quilted versions shown earlier in the show, and their delicacy contrasted brilliantly with the tougher looks.
