David Benjamin Sherry: Chemically infused photography
Photographer Dave Sherry has dropped a lot of his cameras in pools, by accident, or so he claims in an interview with Wooooo Mag’s editor Jason Crombie.
Maybe its the time spent soaking in pool brine–but the resulting images manage to feel both etherial as well as chemically infused. (O.k. well, the images were probably never in a pool, I’m speaking metaphorically). Still I feel something akin to chlorine itching in my eyes when I look at his landscapes.
Sherry has been dubbed one of the most exciting young photographers today to keep an eye on. Born in Woodstock, New York, he went to the Rhode Island School of Design and further inscribed a route to success by attending Yale’s prestigious MFA photo program. Yet his work does not feel like anything I have encountered before, it elides the feeling that it has been heavily influenced by any one school of thought. Its fresh (fresh in a yellow No. 5 and preservative sort of way).
Sherry has recently broadened his practice from fine art to include fashion photography. Keep an eye out for his complex staging and phenomenological use of color in publications such as, Dazed, Another Man, NY Mag, i-D, and V Man.
